Free tool for making CPU loads

If you want to limit-test your device CPU, look no further. Salt’s CPU Load Generator is a free-to-use utility that, as the name suggests, creates load for your central processing unit. It does this by launching several Android Services, each dedicated to computing random data. You get to choose how many Services can run at an instance and turn them on and off as needed.

With its streamlined and straightforward layout, plus its small storage requirements, CPU Load Generator is a good CPU usage testing app for a wide range of devices. Be careful, though, as it can cause overheating.

Push your processor to the limit

CPU Load Generator is useful for a variety of applications. You can use it to benchmark your device and test its limits in terms of CPU processing speed and device temperature. These two crucial criteria can spell your device’s survival or gameplay performance. In other cases, tech-savvy users can force their CPU to heat up, reaching temperatures used to resolve other, supposedly unrelated problems.

This simulated load generator works by opening an Android Service that computes the value of a Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-1) based on a 2MB buffer. It continues calculating and fills itself with random values, making it virtually endless—and continuing the pressure on your device. You could use up to 16 devices; simply toggle a device on and off as needed.

Since it generates load on your device, make sure to use it with caution. At the very least, it will cause your device to lag and freeze until you close the Services on time. As your CPU overworks, it starts to heat up. When left unattended, this can cause irreparable damage to your CPU. Other than these expected risks, the app itself runs very smoothly.

Works as expected

Overall, the CPU Load Generator works as advertised. It offers users a great deal of control over the payload it creates through the switchable Android Services. Also, the way it generates load for the device is fairly consistent, so you won’t be surprised by sudden temperature spikes. Still, use it with caution, as it can cause your phone to freeze or damage your CPU through overheating.

PROS

  • Fairly stable load generation
  • Up to 16 devices are usable
  • Load generation can work for as long as needed

CONS

  • Causes device lag and freezing
  • Overheating can damage CPUs
